Antimicrobial N-20

Antimicrobial N-20 is a propionamide-based biocide used in various applications including cooling water treatment, industrial water treatment, oil recovery, paper mill waste treatment, reverse osmosis, and general water treatment. It is compatible with polymers such as polyethylenes (PE), polypropylenes (PP), and polyvinyl chloride (PVC). This product is commonly used in metalworking fluids and also serves as a preservative in home care and industrial cleaning products, including detergents and polishes. Functions include serving as an anti-microbial agent, biocide, microbicide, antibacterial agent, and preservative. It is effective in preventing microbial growth in fluid systems, emulsions, and slurries.

Product Applications

  • Antimicrobial N-20 is a non-oxidizing, liquid dibromopropionamide formulation which effectively reduces the growth of microorganisms.
  • Anti microbial N-20 is a fast killing, broad-spectrum biocide for treating raw materials, processing water, and contaminated products.
  • In aqueous environments, Antimicrobial N-20 decomposes quickly. It degrades to only carbon dioxide, ammonia, and bromide ion. The entire process may take place with a half-life of less than one-half hour, depending on system conditions.
  • To obtain reliable and reproducible results, homogeneous distribution in the materials to be protected must be ensured by taking suitable measures in production (stirring, agitating, etc.).
  • As with any product, use of the products mentioned in this publication in a given application must be tested (including field testing, etc.) by the user in advance to determine suitability.

Uses

  • A microbiocidal bactericide, fungicide, algaecide and slimicide used in treating recirculating cooling water in industrial cooling systems, paper mills, metalworking cutting fluids, non-potable reverse osmosis systems, enhanced oil recovery systems, air-washer systems, industrial preservation applications and publicly owned treatment works.

Directions for Use

Antimicrobial N-20 is an effective preservative in most aqueous compositions. The quantities required to give protection depend on several factors, particularly the nature and the sensitivity of the products to be preserved, the pH value, the initial microbial content, the extent of expected contact with microorganisms and the envisaged duration of storage. The quantity of biocide required can be optimized by taking additional hygienic measures during production, storage and transport.

Typical applications, and the suggested range of concentrations on which trials can be based, are listed below:
Directions for industrial preservation applications:
Antimicrobial N-20 may be used to reduce microbiological contamination in raw materials and/or products such as: aqueous paints and coatings, polymers, slurries, adhesives, latex and resin emulsions, sizing, caulk, process water, along with specialty industrial products including: inks, polishes, waxs, detergents, and cleansers.

To reduce microbiological contamination:
Add Antimicrobial N-20 to the material or product at a concentration of 25 to 2,000 ppm by weight. This concentration is equivalent to 2.8 to 224.0 fluid ounces Antimicrobial N-20 per 1,000 gallons or 21.4 to 1,712.0 milliliters Antimicrobial N-20 per 1,000 liters. The required concentration will depend on the material being treated and the level of contamination present.

Compatibility Data
  • Antimicrobial N-20 is compatible with materials such as PVC, PE, PP, Kynar and Teflon. Antimicrobial N-20 is corrosive to mild and stainless steel.
  • The presence of strong nucleophiles such as sulfurous compounds (hydrosulfite, bisulfide, sulfide. mercaptans, etc.) or primary amines deactivate Antimicrobial N-20.
