Storage & Handling
- Storage Conditions
- This product is stable and is not considered corrosive for metals and glass. The organic products of combustion are carbon oxides and water.
- This product should be stored away from excessive heat, sources of ignition and reactive materials. Limit indoor storage to areas equipped with an appropriate sprinkler system.
- Typical storage systems keep this product at approximately 86-100°F (30-38°C) and atmospheric pressure. If the moisture content of the ester is critical, the tank should be padded with nitrogen or vented to the atmosphere through a desiccant dryer. An over pressure/vacuum relief device should be provided for the tank.
- K-FLEX® 500 does not have a simple freeze point. The primary component has a freezing point of 82°F (28°C) and a glass transition point of -40°F (-40°C). Under prolonged exposure to freezing temperatures, it will start to partially solidify at approximately 16°F (-9°C). It is recommended that storage tanks be heated and insulated and that pumps and transfer piping also be heat-traced and insulated.
- If the material becomes frozen, it should be heated to 120°F (49°C) and allowed to mix completely until the material temperature is 104°F (40°C) throughout. Typically, the solid particles will melt prior to reaching this temperature. Special attention must be taken to ensure that the bulk tank is completely sealed against moisture and oxygen/air during the heating.
Bulk Tank: K-FLEX® plasticizers may be stored in type 304 stainless steel insulated and heated tanks. Storage tanks should be nitrogen padded to reduce discoloration of the product. Heat traced, type 304 stainless steel pipe and valves should also be used.
275 Gallon (Intermediate Bulk Container) Tote: The tote should be kept in a warm location >70°F (21°C) to prevent material from becoming too viscous and difficult to remove from the tote bin. If the material becomes too viscous or partially frozen, totes may be heated using heating blankets/jackets or a hot box to melt the material. Special attention must be taken to insure that the tote is completely sealed against moisture and oxygen/air during heating.
- Handling Information
Tank Truck: Trailers are loaded with approximately 45,000 lbs. of material for road shipment. They can be unloaded by pump or nitrogen pad. To ensure pumpability of the material it is recommended that the product be heated to 38°C prior to off-loading.
Railcar: Railcars are loaded to approximately 190,000 lbs. of material for shipment by rail. The cars may be bottom unloading or equipped with a dip pipe for top unloading. They can be unloaded with a pump or nitrogen pressure.
It is generally recommended that the product be put through a 5 micron guard filter before being used to filter out any rust from the inside of the containers or equipment if carbon steel is used. To ensure pumpability of the material it is recommended that the product be stored at 100°F (38°C).
ISO Tank: ISO containers are loaded with approximately 45,000 lbs. of material. ISO containers can be unloaded with either nitrogen padding or pumping. The iso container should be equipped with both a relief valve and a rupture disc. Verify pressure setting of relief valve before setting padding pressure. If padding is used for unloading, the pad pressure setting should be maintained well below the relief valve setting.
